Teeth Whitening

What Is Teeth Whitening?

Teeth whitening is a dental procedure that removes stains and lightens the discolouration of your teeth. It’s an excellent way to get a brighter smile and reduce the common yellow tinge that occurs over time.

Your dentist will apply a safe bleaching agent to your discoloured teeth. This penetrates the tooth’s enamel coating and breaks down the stains, allowing your teeth’s natural white shade to shine through once again.

What Causes Discoloured Teeth?

Tooth discolouration can occur for a range of reasons, including:

Tobacco use

The chemicals in cigarettes, cigars, vapes, and chewing tobacco leave yellow or brownish stains on your teeth.

Certain foods and drinks

Excessive consumption of coffee, tea, red wine, and even dark-coloured fruit can stain your teeth over time.

Poor oral hygiene

Inadequate brushing and flossing can cause plaque build-up, leaving your teeth looking darker.

Some medications

Certain medications can discolour teeth, especially in children.

Dental trauma

Trauma to your mouth can disrupt the formation of enamel, resulting in discoloured teeth.

Age

As we age, the enamel on our teeth wears down, revealing the layer of dentine beneath. This leaves your teeth looking yellow rather than white.

Genetics

Some people have naturally darker teeth due to genetics.

When Should You Get Your Teeth Whitened?

Teeth whitening is beneficial for anyone whose discoloured teeth are affecting their confidence. It’s also an excellent option if you’ve recently had crowns or veneers and want your natural teeth to match the shade of your restorations.

You can also get your teeth whitened if you have a special occasion coming up, like a photoshoot or a wedding.

Best Teeth Whitening Options

There are 2 ways you can get your teeth whitened: in the dental chair or by using an at-home kit. The best teeth whitening option for you will depend on your individual needs. However, each has its advantages and its downsides.

In-Chair Whitening

Belmont Dental Surgery offers in-chair teeth whitening: the most professional and effective way to whiten your teeth. You’ll spend 1 to 2 hours in the chair, where your dentist will apply a special teeth whitening gel. Your dentist may also use an LED light to accelerate the whitening process.

This is generally more expensive than take-home whitening kits or over-the-counter kits, but it’s also the most effective teeth whitening option. You’ll be able to work with your dentist to achieve the exact white shade you want, and the results are brighter and longer-lasting than at-home kits.

Take-Home Whitening Kits

Your dentist may offer custom teeth whitening kits, which will include a custom-made whitening tray to ensure optimal coverage and a safe, dental-grade whitening gel. These may be more effective than over-the-counter kits but still less effective than in-chair whitening treatment.

How Long Does Teeth Whitening Take?

Teeth whitening typically takes between 1 and 2 hours. It is not a time-consuming process, but the exact time depends on which type of whitening treatment you choose.

In-Chair Teeth Whitening

Expect to spend between 1 and 2 hours at the dental practice getting treatment if you opt for in-chair whitening. Your dentist will be able to give you a more specific idea beforehand based on the whitening product they use, the shade of white you’re aiming for, whether the treatment uses an LED or UV light, and your oral health.

At-Home Teeth Whitening

At-home teeth whitening is a much longer process. You’re typically required to apply the gel for 10 to 30 minutes at a time, once or twice a day, for 2 weeks to a full month of applying the gel before you see noticeable results.

It’s worth noting that there are various over-the-counter teeth whitening products, like whitening pens, and whitening strips. But, to avoid adverse side effects, we would only recommend using professional whitening products you have received directly from your dental clinic.

How Much Whiter Will My Teeth Be?

How white your teeth get depends on your unique oral health. For healthy but slightly discoloured teeth, you should be able to decide on a shade with your dentist. However, if your teeth are severely discoloured, whitening treatment may only help to a point. In most cases, you should be able to achieve a whiteness several shades brighter than your original colour.

How Long Does Teeth Whitening Last?

In-chair teeth whitening lasts between 6 months and 3 years. The lifespan of your pearly whites depends on the products used and oral care after your teeth whitening procedure.

At-home teeth whitening kits will give you a few months of whiter teeth before they begin to discolour again. Smokers and heavy coffee, tea, or alcohol drinkers should expect a shorter lifespan for their whitening results.

Is Teeth Whitening Safe?

Yes, teeth whitening is safe. At Belmont Dental Surgery, our dentists will ensure that your gums, skin, and eyes are protected from the bleaching agents. Your teeth will be perfectly safe throughout the procedure and just as strong and healthy afterwards.

Who Can’t Have Teeth Whitening Treatment?

Teeth whitening should be avoided by those who:

  • Have untreated dental problems
  • Suffer from gum disease
  • Struggle with sensitive teeth
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding

Consult with your dentist if you fall into any of the above categories. They will point you in the best direction for teeth whitening to suit your needs, or they will advise you on how to improve your oral health so you can get your teeth whitened safely.

How Much Does Teeth Whitening Cost?

Teeth whitening prices vary depending on what type you choose. Here’s what you can expect for each option.

Best Teeth Whitening Aftercare Tips

After your teeth whitening session, follow these tips to maintain great oral hygiene and keep those pearly whites brighter for longer.

  • Choose your foods and drinks carefully: Avoid high-staining and dark foods and drinks such as coffee, berries and sauces for the first 48 hours. Opt instead for light-coloured foods and limit acidic foods and drinks.
  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush: Brush gently and use a fluoride toothpaste. Consider using a specially formulated toothpaste for sensitivity.
  • Avoid tobacco products and vaping: This is the fastest way to ruin your whitening treatment and stain your teeth again!
  • Drink water: This helps to flush away debris and keep those teeth healthy.
  • Schedule touch-ups every 6–12 months: Discuss appropriate timing with your dentist, based on your lifestyle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you whiten fillings, veneers, and crowns?

No, dental restorations can’t be whitened. The material they’re made of doesn’t respond to whitening agents like your teeth do. You can, however, whiten the rest of your teeth to match the shade of your veneers or crowns.

Will teeth whitening make your teeth sensitive?

Teeth whitening may cause tooth sensitivity for a short while after treatment. This is more common in people with poor oral health or receding gum lines. However, the sensitivity will disappear within a few days.

Can teeth whitening damage your teeth?

While teeth whitening may cause temporary sensitivity, it won’t damage the enamel on your teeth. You can whiten your teeth without any worry about hurting yourself or causing permanent damage!
